The rise of AI tools has transformed how we write software. The promise of generating code in seconds feels like magic, offering speed and convenience. Yet, as exciting as AI coding assistants are, they lack a crucial element: understanding the “why” behind every line of code. In projects where security and precision are paramount, AI-generated solutions often fall short without human guidance.

My experience with AI in a high-stakes project involving sensitive user data has shown me that while AI can accelerate repetitive tasks, it cannot replace human judgment. A small bug introduced by AI can compromise the entire system, and that risk is unacceptable.

Examples of AI-Generated Bugs From My Project 🐛

One striking example was the “Forgot Master Password” data deletion flaw. The AI’s solution deleted all encrypted user data when a password was forgotten. Although technically correct, it was completely user-hostile and unacceptable for a project with high-security demands. To resolve this, I created an Emergency Recovery Key system. This allowed users to securely recover their accounts without losing any data.

Another case involved an incorrect canary implementation. The AI hashed a static string to verify master passwords, misunderstanding its security purpose. This created a critical vulnerability. By questioning and guiding the AI, I directed it to encrypt the canary properly with the master password, restoring robust security.

There were also race conditions and role-level security errors caused by separate API calls for registration and recovery key generation. The timing of authentication requests failed, leading to errors. Analyzing logs and tracing these problems helped me implement a dedicated service client for admin tasks, which securely resolved the issue.

Finally, AI also made syntax and reference mistakes like mixing imports, misplaced return statements, and forgotten destructuring. These caused build errors and runtime failures that could have been disastrous in a security-focused environment. By providing detailed error logs and corrections, I helped the AI deliver working code that fit real-world needs.

Humans Give AI Code Purpose

These examples highlight a vital truth: AI can generate code, but it cannot replace the human ability to solve problems with context, purpose, and security in mind. Programming is far more than writing syntactically correct lines. It demands decisions about architecture, usability, and trust in areas where human judgment is essential.

In my projects, I act as the decision-maker, the reviewer, and the security enforcer. I ensure that the AI’s output aligns with strict protocols and overall design goals. Every bug is an opportunity to learn and improve. AI saves time, but humans steer the ship.

Looking Ahead 📝

AI is a powerful assistant in programming, yet meaningful, secure software development still demands a human mind to navigate complexities and uncertainties. The future of software engineering will hinge on this collaboration machines providing speed and scale, humans providing insight and responsibility.

I am a software engineer and tech enthusiast, deeply interested in building secure applications and exploring the intersection of AI and human-guided development. My work focuses on projects that demand high security and precise logic, where mistakes can have serious consequences.

Beyond programming, I am passionate about continuous learning, problem-solving, and leveraging technology to create meaningful solutions. Every project I work on is not only a technical challenge but also an opportunity to push the boundaries of what AI and humans can achieve together.

While experimenting with C programming using Dev C++, I ran into an error that stumped me for hours:
“Source file not compiled”

At first, I thought it was just a syntax issue or something I’d overlooked. But after multiple failed attempts, I realized the issue was deeper, and I’m not the only one who’s faced it.

In this blog, I’ll share:

What causes this issue

What didn’t work

What worked perfectly

A step-by-step guide to setting up the right version of Dev C++ for Windows 10/11

Plus, resources and alternative tools you can explore

😵‍💫 The Issue

After researching, I discovered that the original Bloodshed Dev C++ is not compatible with Windows 10. Worse still, it didn’t even detect intentional syntax errors during compilation, making debugging even more confusing.

🧪 Troubleshooting: What I Tried

When searching online, I came across many suggestions, including:

Renaming or deleting
collect2.exe
— can break your compiler

Manual compiling via command line — too advanced for beginners

Changing compiler settings — hit or miss

Deleting the
.exe
file manually — temporary fix

Updating PATH environment variables — not always the issue

Creating new projects instead of opening
.c
files directly — occasionally helpful

These were all “maybe” solutions that didn’t consistently work for me.

✅ What Actually Worked

After trying multiple fixes, the most reliable solution was:
🛠️ Installing the latest version of Dev C++ from Embarcadero.

The classic Bloodshed version is outdated and no longer maintained, leading to compatibility issues. The Embarcadero version, on the other hand, is actively maintained and includes an updated GCC compiler, making it much more stable on modern systems.

But if you’re just starting out, Embarcadero Dev C++ is a solid starting point.

TL;DR

That error happens because old Dev C++ is outdated and incompatible

Don’t waste time trying to fix it. Install the Embarcadero version instead

Follow the step-by-step guide above to get started easily

Consider switching to modern IDEs later

But for those of us who truly want to learn and grow, one crucial question remains: Am I using AI the right way? How do I know when it’s helping me and when it’s holding me back?

Many students worry about becoming overly dependent on AI, feeling overwhelmed, or even questioning their own abilities. I’ve been there too. At times, I’ve felt confident and excited, convinced AI was helping me grow. But other times, I’ve felt uncertain, questioning whether I was truly learning or simply taking shortcuts.

If you’ve ever struggled with this confusion, you’re not alone. This post is here to help you navigate these feelings, clear up the doubts, and learn how to use AI as a tool for real growth. Together, we’ll explore practical ways to use AI effectively, avoid common pitfalls, and ultimately become better learners in the process.

The Growing Use of AI Among Students

A survey of students around the world in mid-2024 revealed that an overwhelming 86% had used artificial intelligence tools for their schoolwork. Additionally, 54% reported using AI at least weekly, while nearly a quarter (24%) relied on it daily. With AI becoming an integral part of education, it’s crucial to understand how to use it wisely without becoming overly dependent.

Section 1: The Role of AI in Learning

AI can be a fantastic tool when used responsibly. Here’s how it can support your learning journey:

Simplifying Complex Concepts: Struggling with a tricky topic? AI can break it down into simpler terms.

Generating Ideas: AI can help brainstorm essay topics, project ideas, or solutions to problems.

Practicing and Improving: Tools like AI coding assistants or language models can guide you through practice exercises.

Saving Time on Repetitive Tasks: Use AI to summarize notes, create flashcards, or organize your study materials.

The key: AI is here to support your learning, not replace it.

Section 2: When NOT to Use AI

While AI is helpful, there are times when it’s better to rely on yourself:

When You’re Avoiding Effort: If you use AI to skip the hard parts like solving a tough problem, you miss the chance to learn and grow.

When It Becomes a Crutch: If you feel like you can’t complete an assignment without AI, it’s a sign to step back and rely on your own knowledge.

When You Don’t Understand the Output: Using AI without understanding its answers can leave gaps in your learning.

Ask yourself: Am I learning, or just getting it done?

Example: For instance, if you copy AI-generated essays without engaging in the writing process, your critical thinking and writing skills might suffer.

Section 3: How to Know If You’re Using AI the Right Way

Here’s how you can evaluate whether you’re using AI effectively:

Does it enhance your understanding? Use AI to explain, clarify, or explore new ideas, not just to provide answers.

Are you still thinking critically? Make sure you’re questioning the outputs, verifying facts, and applying your own logic.

Are you learning by doing? Use AI as a coach, not a substitute. For example, ask it to guide you step-by-step through a problem rather than giving you the solution outright.

Example: Instead of asking, “What’s the answer to this problem?”, ask, “Can you explain how to solve this step-by-step so I can learn?”

Are you using AI wisely?

✅ I use AI to clarify concepts, not just to get answers.

✅ I verify AI-generated information before accepting it.

✅ I try solving problems on my own before asking AI.

Section 4: Overcoming Overwhelm and Imposter Syndrome

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed or question your abilities when using AI, especially if it feels like it’s doing “all the work.” Here’s how to overcome those feelings:

Acknowledge Your Role: AI is just a tool; you’re the one driving the learning process.

Focus on Growth, Not Perfection: Mistakes are part of learning. AI can help correct them, but the effort is what counts.

Celebrate Small Wins: Recognize your progress, even if AI assists along the way.

Reframe How You See AI: Using AI doesn’t make you less capable; it shows that you’re resourceful and willing to adapt to modern tools.

Why does AI trigger imposter syndrome? Sometimes, seeing AI provide instant answers can make students feel inadequate or question their own intelligence. However, AI is a tool designed to assist, not replace human learning. One way to counter this is by setting small, achievable learning goals and focusing on progress rather than perfection.

Section 5: How AI Helps You Grow as a Student

When used correctly, AI can be a powerful growth tool:

Encourages Exploration: AI can expose you to topics and ideas you might not have considered.

Builds Confidence: As you use AI to fill gaps in your knowledge, you’ll feel more capable of tackling challenges on your own.

Frees Up Time for Meaningful Learning: By automating repetitive tasks, AI allows you to focus on deeper learning experiences.

Enhances Critical Thinking: Evaluating AI outputs trains you to analyze, question, and refine ideas.

Conclusion

AI is a game-changer for students, but it’s only as effective as the person using it. Remember, the goal isn’t just to complete tasks; it’s to learn, grow, and become better at what you do.

The way I use AI for learning might not be the same way you do. This guide is based on my experiences, opinions, and advice. Now, I’d love to hear from you; how do you use AI in your learning process? Do you feel it’s helping or hindering you? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments!

I was once a person who lacked direction, despite being hardworking and dedicated. Throughout my school years, I was often praised for my work ethic and frequently sought out for advice. However, I came to realize that effort alone wasn’t enough—I needed a clearer sense of purpose. I had been moving forward without truly understanding the reasons behind my actions. This aimlessness persisted, and although my brother’s work as a developer was inspiring, my own attempts to learn web and mobile development—using HTML, CSS, and Android—were held back by a lack of focus and innovative drive.

Embracing a New Approach to Learning

The biggest challenge was realizing I needed a new approach to find my focus and purpose in learning.

While I haven’t completely figured everything out, I have started setting clear, specific goals and breaking down

complex topics into manageable steps. With support from mentors and by tackling hands-on projects, much of it inspired by my ALX journey, I’m applying what I’m learning and discovering new ways to think creatively. Though it’s still a work in progress, this approach is helping me develop a more focused and motivated mindset

The Value of Purpose and a Growing Journey

This journey has shown me the value of having a clear purpose, even if it’s still evolving.

Setting meaningful goals, staying motivated, and exploring different ways to apply my skills have been transformative steps. I may not have all the answers yet, but I’m excited to continue on this path, ready to learn, grow, and adapt along the way.

Lessons: Recognize the importance of a clear purpose to drive motivation, set specific goals broken into manageable steps, and embrace ongoing growth and adaptation in your learning journey.

Armed with AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, I embarked on a journey of sourcing, verifying, and visualizing data. Here’s a breakdown of my approach, along with reflections and key takeaways.

Step 1: Building a Targeted Search Strategy

Objective: Start with precise searches to efficiently locate reliable data.

To streamline my search process, I consulted ChatGPT, which helped me craft focused search terms such as:

City’s Area: “Los Angeles geographical size square miles”

Park Count: “San Francisco number of parks 2023”

Population: “San Diego population 2023 estimate”

Quick Tip: Combine the city name with specific terms like “population” or “area” and limit searches to trusted domains (e.g., .gov). Using targeted queries leads to more relevant results and saves time.

Step 2: Verifying Data Accuracy

Objective: Ensure every data point is sourced from a verified, credible source.

While Gemini guided me to reliable resources, I placed priority on information from official government or city websites, especially for essential data categories:

Geographical Size (Square Miles)

Number of Public Parks

Population as of Last Year

Insight: Cross-referencing is essential for frequently updated data, like population stats. Tools like Gemini offer a good start, but for complete confidence, validate numbers against trusted sources, such as the U.S. Census Bureau.

Step 3: Managing Information Overload

Objective: Filter out irrelevant data to focus on what’s useful.

Handling the abundance of information was challenging. To keep organized, I relied on high-trust sources, like .gov domains, and used Google Sheets to categorize and validate data by city.

Pro Tip: Filter sources based on reliability and use Google Sheets to categorize data by city and attribute. This setup not only saves time but also makes spotting discrepancies easier.

Step 4: Creating a Clear, Well-Organized Data Table

Objective: Structure a Google Sheets document for easy referencing.

Using Gemini, I quickly generated a Google Sheets layout, giving me a solid foundation. I labeled columns clearly (e.g., City, Size, Parks, Population) and included a row for sources at the sheet’s end.

Tip: Clear labels and color coding can enhance readability in your Sheets. A well-structured table is essential for easy referencing and comparison.

Step 5: Visualizing Data Through Simple Charts

Objective: Build an accessible visual representation of the data.

For a clean presentation, I used Google Sheets’ bar chart feature. Although the setup was simple, I focused on using color and clear labels to make the chart intuitive.

Visualization Insight: Keep it simple. While elaborate styling can be tempting, straightforward visuals tend to communicate data more effectively.

Reflection and Takeaways

Working with AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini streamlined the research process, but I learned a few crucial lessons:

Effective Searches: Precise, targeted queries can significantly reduce search time.

Cross-Verification: Even with AI tools, double-checking data with official sources is key.

Google Sheets Skills: A well-organized spreadsheet can improve clarity and workflow efficiency.

What I’d Do Differently Next Time
While AI tools were helpful, I’d invest more time in exploring advanced verification methods and further refining data organization in Google Sheets. This approach would enhance both the efficiency and accuracy of my research.

In Summary
This project illustrated the power of combining AI-assisted research with structured, manual verification and data management. The experience deepened my understanding of the data research process and laid a solid foundation for future projects.
